Gary W. "Jock" Benner, 76, of Fannettsburg, PA, formerly of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Feb. 8, 2023, in Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 16 years, Ruth A. (Olson) Benner.

Born Sept. 10, 1946 in Hagerstown, he was a son of the late William Chaney and Frances Hammond.  He graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1964.

Gary was a woodworker and had a career of 32 years with the former Statton Furniture Manufacturing Co. in Hagerstown.  Following that he worked for Grove Manufacturing in Shady Grove, PA.   More recently, he was employed at the Fannettsburg Inn, where his job titles were many.

Jock loved horses, had his trainer's license, owned several race horses and was known at the Charlestown Race Track.  His memberships included the NRA,  Funkstown Maryland Legion Dixon-Troxell Post 211, Capon Post 2102, VFW, Wardensville, WV, St. Thomas Sportsmen's Association,  the Mercersburg Moose Lodge 1790 and American Legion Post 517, Mercersburg, all in PA.

Gary is fondly remembered by his family as a sincere and genuine man of his word, who loved life along with being a "Jack of all Trades."  He loved his family, his dogs, being outside hunting and fishing along with golfing and spending time at his hunting camp in WV.  Shooting pool was also a favorite pastime.  He cared about others and helped out at Path Valley Outreach.

Surviving with his wife, Ruth, are 4 children: Paula Stevens and her fiance' Todd Summerfield of Elkins, WV, Tammy Mosley and her husband, Darryl of Riverview, FL, Carol Ann Willliams, Greencastle, PA and Gary  Benner II and his wife, Mary, Hedgesville, WV; 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Bobby Benner, Smithsburg, MD and 3 sisters: Mary Hamby, Clearspring, MD, Carrie "Bugs" Baker, Hagerstown, MD and JoAnn Gardner, Big Pool, MD.  Also surviving are 4 stepchildren: Renate Thompson, Springfield, VA, Annette Thompson, Fannettsburg, Lyle S. Thompson, Jr., Fannettsburg and Ty Thompson, McConnellsburg, PA and nieces, nephews and special cousins.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Mike Benner.

Viewing Monday, Feb. 13 between 6 and 8 PM and Tuesday, after 10 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM in the Agett-Lakjer Funeral Home, 16715 Path Valley Road, Spring Run, PA with Pastor Darwin Goshorn officiating.  Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
